Accessibility Requirements

OBJECTIVE:  While many Farm Stand clients do not require mobility assistance when visiting the premises, nevertheless some do, such as those who use a wheelchair, a walker, or a cane. Despite the difficulties associated with a limited budget, Hope Clinic was advised by this designer to nevertheless bear the expense associated with bringing the sidewalk and ramps into compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The materials presented here called for (1) the extension of the existing sidewalk by approximately two and three quarters feet (~2.83 ft.), (2) the reconstruction of the north and south ramps (following the appropriate extension), and (3) the addition of a ramp centered on the east facing door. MORE DETAILS:  While it is true that any extension of the sidewalk beyond its current extent would necessarily have reduced the width of the segment of paving that provides vehicle access to the rear parking area, it was already too narrow for bidirectional traffic, and the reduction necessary for ADA compliance would not have substantially impede unidirectional flow.

OUTCOME:  While the sidewalks were replaced during the renovation, they were not expanded beyond their original dimensions, and unfortunately, the recommendations of this project have yet to be fully implemented. Future proposals should include a more detailed cost-benefit analyses to persuade stakeholders.

PROFICIENCIES:  This technical drawing and the associated correspondence demonstrate both experience and proficiency in communicating the design requirements associated with rendering the Farm Stand compliant with applicable civil ordinances.
