Produce Stand | Model Q.

OBJECTIVE:  While the renovation of the building that would become the Farm Stand was underway, the question of outfitting the facility with equipment and display fixtures was concurrently addressed. The determination was made through a dialogue between Hope Clinic’s management and this designer that much of the commercially available equipment was not only prohibitively expensive but would also fit poorly within the layout of the building and its intended function. Accordingly, the decision was made to commission this designer to generate the necessary schematic and fabricate custom shelving units. (Click here for more details.)

MORE DETAILS:  The overall dimensions of the stands were selected such that, (1) persons of average stature could access their contents with ease and comfort and would also (2) efficiently accommodate the types of containers commonly used for packaging and displaying produce, such as bushel baskets, wooden and plastic crates, and corrugated banana boxes. Each stand was designed to incorporate locking caster wheels so that it could be easily repositioned should the need arise. The design of the stands also featured a mechanism to secure one to another to prevent unwanted displacement and misalignment. The section above the upper shelf is not merely cosmetic. It was instead intended to function as a wall when the stands are linked together, such that the Farm Stand structure could be functionally divided into two sections (the first was originally a waiting area and the second remains the shopping area).

PROFICIENCIES:  Apart for the relatively straight forward process of building the models in SketchUp, many of the materials and textures employed were taken from photographs of real-world objects. Once again, this project demonstrates a talent for creating high-quality 2D drawings from 3D models, documents versatile enough to excite the interest of non-technical stakeholders, while simultaneously providing sufficient detail for contractors to use in the process of fabrication.

OUTCOME:  The result of the design process was the fabrication of two types of mobile shelving units, the first with a quadrilateral footprint, and the second with a pentagonal footprint suitable for efficiently using corners spaces.
