Minimalist Nesting Tables

OBJECTIVE:  In the Summer of 2016, Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor, M (a local food bank and partner of Hope Clinic) requested the expansion of the services Hope provides by making fresh fruits and vegetables available during the hours in which Hope’s pantry operates. As has always been the case when services at Hope have been expanded, the limited space in which to accommodate such an expansion posed a significant challenge and constrained the range of possible solutions. This designer was tasked with making the conception a reality. (Click here for more details.)

PROFICIENCIES:  In addition to proficiencies with SketchUp and LayOut, the successful completion of this project required a systematic review and precise measurement of the available space and an ongoing dialogue with managers and other stakeholders to adjust where needed. Additionally, an accounting of materials was provided to minimize waste, simplify the manufacturing process and therefore the cost. Revisions of the technical drawings were made to better meet the requirements of the skilled craftsman who executed them.

OUTCOME:  The optimal solution, at once refined and practical, called for the fabrication of a set of six custom, nesting tables. The implementation of this plan resulted in a set of exceptionally durable tables, minimalist in style and finished with visually pleasing yet durable rough-sawn cedar tabletops. The instantiated design allows for numerous configurations, each of which is tailored to the dictates of current need.
